About Us
- Osteopathyworks is the web site for Kendall Chew, Kirsten Nottrot
(both of whom are osteopaths, registered with the General Osteopathic
Council (GOsC) ) and associates. The associates include a Doctor,
who specialises in sport and exercise medicine and a sports & remedial
masseuse. Referals are also made to a local Chiropodist. and to the
on site Pilates instructor.
- Kendall Chew moved to Alsager Leisure Centre in March of 2000,
having previously worked in Nantwich for four years. There is no
doubt that the move has helped improve the quality of after treatment
care, as rehabilitation and exercise classes are on the doorstep.
Osteopathy is a broad church and the impression given here, may
be of a clinic set up purely to deal with sports injuries. One of
the reasons for moving to the Leisure Centre was to make osteopathy
move readily available to sports people. A significant percentage
of post graduate training is devoted to courses on sports injury
treatment, for two reasons, first, we like sport. Second, treating
non sporting injuries using techniques aimed primarily at the sports
person works very effectively, by the way, we don't expect to see
you in a track suit. The nature of most injuries is outside the
field of sport, and that is what we mostly treat - people with pain.
Kirsten Nottrot also has a practice in Biddulph
- Osteopathy is now governed by statute, and as such, certain qualifications
and levels of competent practice are required by law. Commonly, the
letters you will see after an osteopath's name will be: D.O.,( Diploma
in Osteopathy) or BSc (Ost) Hons ( Bachelor of Science in osteopathy,
Honours degree) The latter superceeds the diploma but is not a better
qualification. All osteopaths will have completed a course of four
years. During this time they will have studied; Anatomy, in great
depth, as this is our primary work tool, Orthopaedics, to understand
disease processes of the bony structures of the body, Radiology, to
be able to comprehend the images on X-rays and MRI Scans, Neurology,
allowing us to interperet certain symptoms and tests, related to the
nervous system, Physiology, which is the study of the body at a cellular
level, we need to have an understanding of the way the body works
so that when it starts to fail, we can understand why it is failing
and whether or not it can be relieved using osteopathy. Medicine,
we need to have a reasonable understanding of disease processes and
how they present in the individual, in order that we can be sure of
being able to help, even if that means passing you onto your Dr. Certain
diseases have pain patterns that mimic musculoskeletal problems. The
best known example of this is a Heart attack ( myocardial infarction),
where the pain may pass into the left arm and up into the neck. It
is possible( although unlikely) that this could be mistaken for a
shoulder problem. In reality we will make an assessment of you and
your presenting symptoms, let you know what we think and refer onwards,
if necessary. Onward referal may be for something we have found co-incidentally,
like high blood pressure, which needs to be re-checked by your Dr,
prior to an appropriate course of action. This type of referal may
not affect our treatment plan. In other words, there are circumstances
when we can still treat you whilst you are under the administrations
of your G.P.
